Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

Morphometric evaluation of Japanese quail embryos and their extraembryonic vascular networks exposed to low-frequency magnetic field with two different intensities med./bio.

Published in: Electromagn Biol Med 2020; 39 (4): 403-410

Aim of study (acc. to author)

The effects of exposure of Japanese quail embryos to a 60 Hz magnetic field on the development of the embryonic body and vascular network of the yolk sac should be investigated.

Background/further details

A total of 30 eggs of Japanese quail were divided into the following groups (n=10, respectively): 1) exposure to a 0.16 mT magnetic field, 2) exposure to a 0.65 mT magnetic field, 3) control group. After 24 h of egg incubation, an opening of approximately 3 cm2 was made with sterile scissors and it was covered with parafilm. This opening allowed the embryo and yolk sac membrane to be visualized. Exposure to the magnetic field startet at 54 h of incubation and finished exactly at 72 h.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

Embryos exposed to the 0.65 mT magnetic field (group 2) showed a significantly smaller body area and percentage cephalic length compared to the control group.
The authors concluded that exposure of Japanese quail embryos to a 60 Hz magnetic field showed no effects on vascular network of the yolk sac but might decrease the development of the embryonic body.
