The effects of a chronic whole body exposure of rats to a 50 Hz magnetic field on the E-cadherin expression in colon tumors should be investigated.
E-cadherin is a protein in the cell membrane with importance for cell adhesion. A reduced expression of E-cadherin is related to an increased metastasis formation of tumor cells. The formation of colon tumors was provoked by rectal adminstration of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea. 30 rats were divided into the following four groups: 1) N-methyl-N-nitrosourea alone (n=10), 2) N-methyl-N-nitrosourea and magnetic field exposure (n=10), 3) magnetic field exposure alone (n=5), 4) control (n=5).

No statistically significant differences in the expression rate of E-cadherin in the nucleus were found between the groups. However, a significantly higher expression rate of cytoplasmic E-cadherin was found in group 1 (N-methyl-N-nitrosourea alone) compared to group 3 (magnetic field exposure alone) (remark EMF-Portal: no results were shown for histological analysis).
The authors conclude that a chronic exposure of rats to a 50 Hz magnetic field with 5 mT causes significant alterations in the cytoplasmic expression of E-cadherin in the colon.
