Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

A 60-Hz magnetic field increases the incidence of squamous cell carcinomas in mice previously exposed to chemical carcinogens med./bio.

Aim of study (acc. to author)

To investigate the effects of a 60 Hz magnetic field exposure on skin tumor development in the SENCAR-mouse-model.

Background/further details

DMBA and PMA were used to initiate and promote cancer development. A total of 96 mice were used in this study (2 groups/48 animals each). One group was magnetic field exposed, whereas the other was sham exposed. Each mouse obtained a single, sub-carcinogenic DMBA administration (10 nmol). One week thereafter the weekly administration of PMA (0.3 µg) began and were conducted over the next 23 weeks. Magnetic field exposure and sham exposure were conducted for additional 29 weeks (total exposure/sham exposure time 52 weeks).

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

The number of tumor-bearing mice was not significantly altered after 52 weeks. However, the number of squamous cell carcinomas in the magnetic field exposed group was statistically significant increased.
