Molecular Biology. Named after Edwin Southern, born in 1938. A technique for detecting specific DNA sequences. It involves transferring DNA fragments that have been separated by gel electrophoresis to nitrocellulose filters. The position of the specific base sequences can be detected by exposing them to known labeled complementary probes.
