Immunology. A glycoprotein that is produced and shed into the blood by B-lymphocytes after activation by an antigen. Due to their molecular structure, antibodies have the capability of binding to a certain antigen with a very high specifity, forming the antigen-antibody-complex. Antibodies consist of four protein chains, forming an Y, with the antigen-binding sites located on the two arms, while the stem presents a structure that can be recognized by other cells of the immune system.

Immunoglobulins are classified by structure and activity into five classes: IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, and IgM.
