Organic Chemistry. Formaldehyde is a pungent, colorless gas and the simplest aldehyde, HCHO. It causes denaturation of proteins, inactivation of enzymes and has a bacteriostatic effect. It is used as an antiseptic, disinfectant and fixative for tissues.
