Molecular biology. Miniaturized chemical reaction area that is used to test gene expression in simultaneous reactions. Oligonucleotides or cDNA are anchored to a chip as an array. Complementary DNA or RNA of the sample will hybridize with the DNA on the chip. Double-stranded and single-stranded nucleic acids can be distinguished by measurement of the fluorescent or radioactive signals.
