Oncology. Astrocytoma is a type of brain tumor and the most common type of glioma. It is a neoplasm of the brain and spinal cord derived from astrocytes. Astrocytomas vary from histologically benign forms to highly anaplastic and malignant tumors and are classified in order of increasing malignancy (grades I through IV).
