Biochemistry. A group of corticosteroids that affect metabolism of carbohydrates (gluconeogenesis), lipids and proteins, inhibit corticotropin secretion, and possess anti-inflammatory activity. Glucocorticoids (e.g., cortisone, cortisol) are produced by the adrenal cortex and provide for the response to stress.
