Physiology. One of the two major pharmacologically defined subdivisions of adrenergic receptors that respond to epinephrine, norepinephrine and other catecholamines as physiological agonists. Alpha-adrenergic receptors are further subdivided into two subclasses, alpha-1 and alpha-2.
