Merkel cell

Histology. Named after Friedrich Sigmund Merkel, 1845-1919. A specialized cell located in the basal layer of the epidermis and characterized by numerous membrane-bound granules containing neuropeptides. By a mechanic stimulus the content of the vesicles is released thus activating the adjacent nerve cell.
