distortion product otoacoustic emissions

Synonyms:
  • DPOAE
German: Verzerrungsprodukt otoakustischer Emissionen
Japanese: 歪成分耳音響放射

Physiology. Tones produced

by distorsion in the cochlea in response to two pure tones. A healthy cochlea stimulated simultaneously by two pure tones generates additional frequency components called distortion products. These are not present in the original

stimuli and are due to the two-tone interactions caused by the non-linearity

of the cochlea. DPOAEs are recorded by a microphone placed in the ear channel. They are useful to test hearing, especially of newborns.
