Biochemistry. A second messenger involved in the signal transduction system resulting in increase of intracellular calcium. It is formed by the action of the enzyme phospholipase C on the membrane phospholipid phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate. It causes the release of calcium ions from intracellular stores thus stimulating the activity of protein kinase C.
