hippocampus

Synonyms:

German: Hippocampus
Japanese: 海馬

Anatomy. Region of the brain that is associated primarily with memory. The name is derived from the resembling structure of a sea horse (Greek: hippokampus) or of the horn of the ancient Egyptian god Amun (cornu Ammonis).
The hippocampus is a complex curved structure situated in both temporal lopes beneath the cerebral cortex. The hippocampus consists of the gyrus dentatus and the regions CA1, CA2, CA3 und CA4. The hippocampus is the place of the olfactory centre and part of the limbic system. Further, it is essential for initial storing of long-term memory for a period of days to weeks.

The linguistic usage of Cornu ammonis is inconsistent: sometimes it is used as a synonyme for hippocampus or to describe a part of the hippocampus.
