Statistics. One of the three values that divides an ordered distribution into four parts each containing one quarter of the scores. In the series 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12 the 1st quartile is 3, the 2nd quartile (also called median) is 5 and the 3rd quartile is 9.
