Anatomy. The mucous membrane lining of the uterus that is hormonally responsive during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. The endometrium grows in anticipation of nurturing an implanting embryo in the event of a pregnancy; it is shed in menstruation if pregnancy does not occur.
