Enzymology. An enzyme of the transferase class that catalyzes the reversible transfer of an amino group from aspartate to alpha-ketoglutarate to form glutamate and oxaloacetate, with pyridoxal phosphate required as a cofactor. This enzyme is mainly synthesized in liver, heart, skeletal muscle, kidney and brain. Increased level of GOT in the blood is an indicator of liver disease or damage of the cardiac muscle.
