1. Chemistry. A salt of hydrochloric acid consisting of two elements, one of which is chlorine, e.g., sodium chloride (table salt, NaCl).

2. Haematology. The major anion in the blood and extracellular fluid. It is an electrolyte and thus is involved in water balance and acid-base balance of the body.
