Chemistry. A crystalline compound with the chemical formula NaCl. It is used to season or preserve food. Sodium chloride plays an important biological role in maintaining the osmotic tension of blood and tissues. A physiological salt solution (isotonic salt solution) is an aqueous solution of 0.9 % sodium chloride which is used in medicine as infusion to compensate fluid and electrolytes depletion and as a solvent for drugs.
