Communications engineering. LTE, a fourth generation mobile communication technique (4G), is a new standard for wireless high-speed communication for mobile phones and data terminals. Based on the network technologies of GSM and UMTS, LTE stands out due to its higher capacity and transmission speed on the basis of new modulation techniques. LTE operates with less power and provides a better connection quality than for example GSM. It uses a flexible bandwidth between 1.25 - 20 MHz and data rates of 100 MBit/s for the downlink and 50 MBit/s for the uplink. For the operation in cities, frequencies of 2500 - 2690 MHz are used and for rural areas the frequencies from 790 - 862 MHz, offering a greater range. LTE is the first worldwide consistent mobile radio standard.
