Anatomy. The caplike, membrane-bound structure covering the head of a spermatozoon. The acrosome contains proteolytic enzymes involved in penetration of the oocyte. These enzymes are released after the acrosome reaction in which the outer acrosomal membrane is fused with the sperm plasma membrane.
