Chemistry. In general, a member of a group of chemical compounds containing nitrogen.
1. An amide (-CO-NH2) is a derivative of a carboxylic acid in which the hydroxyl group has been replaced by an amine or ammonia. This is the reaction that forms peptide bonds between amino acids.
2. Any organic compound containing the functional group -CO-NH2.
3. A compound in which a hydrogen atom on nitrogen from ammonia is replaced by a metal cation (e.g., potassium amide, KNH2).
