Electromagnetism. Lightnings are electrical discharges between thunderstorm clouds or between a cloud and the Earth's surface. The lightning discharges voltages of more than 100 million volt and produces currents of several 100,000 amperes. The flash heats the air up to 30,000 °C and causes an explosive expansion of the air which is called thunder.
