electric arc

German: Lichtbogen

Electricity. A current spark formed between two objects of different potential that are not in contact with each other, usually a highly charged source and the ground. Electric arcs across specially designed electrodes can produce very high heat and are used for such purposes as arc welding. Lightning is a natural electric arc between one cloud and the earth during a thunderstorm.
