Neurology. Named after Alois Alzheimer, 1864-1915. A progressive, neurodegenerative disease characterized by loss of function and death of nerve cells in several areas of the brain. The progression of Alzheimer's disease leads to the loss of mental abilities such as memory, speech, orientation and recognition. It typically develops after the age of 60 in both men and women.
