Anatomy. Areas of the brain and spinal cord that appear grey in cross section preparates, because they are composed mainly of nerve cell bodies. The grey substance clearly contrasts from the white substance containing bundles of nerve fibres. The cerebral cortex and some areas deep within the brain called nuclei or basal ganglia, are made up of grey matter.
