synapse

German: Synapse
Japanese: シナプス

Physiology. A connection between excitable cells, by which an excitation is conveyed from one cell to the other. The chemical synapse uses neurotransmitters that diffuse across the synaptic cleft and bind to their corresponding receptors on the postsynaptic membrane. The electrical synapse is one in which electrical connection is made directly through the cytoplasm, via gap junctions.
