Biochemistry. One of the key substances in the process of biological energy transfer. ATP is a nucleotide, consisting of the purine base adenine, the ribose sugar and three phosphate groups. Two of the phosphate groups can be split off with a gain of energy. The energy, which is won by the degradation of glucose in the cell, is used to regenerate ATP from ADP and phosphate.
