The effects of exposure to a 900 MHz electromagnetic field on bone healing of rats with an experimental tibia fracture and with and without wire fixation should be investigated.

Rats were divided into 4 groups (n=10 each): 1) exposure to the electromagnetic field and no wire fixation, 2) exposure to the electromagnetic field and wire fixation, 3) no exposure to the electromagnetic field and wire fixation, 4) no exposure to the electromagnetic field and no wire fixation.

The amounts of new bone and blood vessels were significantly decreased in rats with EMF exposure and wire fixation (group 3) compared to rats without EMF exposure and with wire fixation (group 2).
The authors conclude that exposure to a 900 MHz electromagnetic field might be harmful for bone healing in rats with an experimental tibia fracture and wire fixation while no such effect was found in bone fractures without wire fixation.
