Chemistry. C6H6. Simplest ring-shaped (aromatic) hydrocarbon from which the aromatic compounds are derived. Benzene is a colorless, volatile and flammable liquid and a byproduct of coal distillation. Benzene is toxic and causes neurological symptoms acutely and bone marrow damage and leukemia chronically. Benzene is a known carcinogen.
