Physarum polycephalum

Japanese: モジホコリカビ

Microbiology. Belongs to the slime molds (myxomycetes). It consists of a membrane-bound single cell containing multiple nuclei (plasmodium) which can spread about 30 cm. Therefore it is very useful in studies of cytoplasm streaming and the cell cycle in biomedical research. It reproduces by spores stored in stalked and multilobed sporangia.
