  • GFP
German: grün-fluoreszierendes Protein
Japanese: 緑色蛍光タンパク質

Biochemie. A protein with 238 amino acids found in jellyfish (Aequorea victoria) which fluoresces, or glows green visible light when excited by UV light with a wavelength of 395 nanometres. It is a new dye which is used as a biological marker in molecular genetics, biomedical research and biotechnology. GFP allows numerous applications in living cells such as a reporter gene in studies of gene expression and as a potential measure of protein-protein interaction.
