Biochemistry. The steroid hormone that is secreted by the corpus luteum of the ovary. It prepares the uterus for the reception and development of the fertilized ovum and maintains an optimal intrauterine environment for sustaining pregnancy. During pregnancy it is produced in large quantities by the placenta.
