Anatomy. The largest and most numerous neuroglial cells in the brain and spinal cord contributing to the blood-brain barrier. Astrocytes are shaped like a star with many long processes. They provide structural support for neurons, regulate the extracellular ionic and chemical environment, and have a high-affinity neurotransmitter uptake system.
