Psychology. A response that is gradually developed by training and association through the frequent repetition of a definite stimulus.
Iwan Pawlow (1849 - 1936) carried out following experiment: if several times a tone was sounded before a dog was fed, the dog started salivation when it heard the tone (conditional stimulus), even if no food was present.
