Pharmacology. Discovered by Selman Waksman in 1943/44. An aminoglycoside antibiotic produced by the bacterium Streptomyces griseus; effective against a broad range of bacteria, used to treat tuberculosis. It blocks the protein biosynthesis in the ribosome.
