antimetabolite

German: Antimetabolit
Japanese: 代謝拮抗薬

Pharmacology. A substance that closely resembles an essential metabolite and therefore interferes with physiological reactions involving it. It can block the dividing of fast proliferating tumor cells and therefore is used as cytostatics in the cancer treatment (e.g., cytarabine, fluorouracil, mercaptopurine, methotrexate, thioguanine).
