Chemistry. Chemical element with the symbol P. It is a nonmetallic element occurring naturally in phosphates, especially apatite. Phosphorus is an essential element for all organisms. It is a major component of nucleic acids, enzymes and bones and involved in energy metabolism and in almost all metabolic processes.
The radioactive isotope phosphorus-32 is used as marker in biochemical research.
