Physiology. A group of naturally occurring compounds derived from unsaturated 20-carbon fatty acids, primarily arachidonic acid, via the cyclooxygenase pathway. Prostaglandins are potent mediators of numerous different physiologic processes, such as vasodilation, vasoconstriction, contraction or relaxation of smooth muscle, inhibition of gastric secretion, inflammation and pain.
