Biochemistry. Phospholipid of the cell membranes involved in the signal transduction system resulting in increase of intracellular calcium. It is the major substrate for receptor-stimulated phosphoinositidase C, with the breakdown to the second messengers inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate and diacylglycerol.
