Simian virus 40

  • SV40
German: Simian Virus 40
Japanese: シミアンウイルス40

Microbiology. A species of polyomavirus originally isolated from Rhesus monkey kidney cell cultures. Animal experiments revealed its oncogene potential whereas its role in human tumors (e.g. non-Hodgkin lymphoma) is still discussed.
Cells transformed with defective SV40 are used as host cells for certain SV40-cloning vectors in gene technology.
