Molecular genetics. Short DNA sequences consisting of repeating units of 1-6 base pairs in length. The number of repeating units is very variable. The simple sequence repeats are widely distributed throughout the genome. They are used as molecular markers in genetics including relationship and population studies as well as linkage studies of diseases.
