Medicine. Reduction of bone mass leading to an increased risk of fracture. The bone mineral density is reduced 2.5 standard deviations below the young adult reference range. It is most frequently measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Osteoporosis is most common in women after menopause due to estrogen deficiency.
