Electricity. Corona ions are electrically charged particles that are produced by the corona at the surface of the conductors. The corona ions can be blown away from the power lines by the wind. The corona ions can attach themselves to microscopic airborne particles and increase the charge on those pollutant particles increasing their ability to attach to surfaces such as skin or airways. Furthermore, by production of free radicals in the air airborne pollutants can arise (e.g. ozone and nitric oxides) which are generally quickly neutralized by chemical reactions or attachment to other airborne pollutants and therefore have no great range.
