hysteresis

German: Hysterese
Japanese: ヒステリシス

1. Physics. A lagging of a physical effect on a body behind its cause.

2. Medical engineering. Hysteresis in a pacemaker allows the heart's natural rate to fall about ten beats per minute below the pacemaker's rate before the pacemaker takes over. Thus the heart has time enough to regain the normal activity without intervention.
