Anatomy. One of a pair of inner female sexual organs. The ovaries are almond-shaped and are situated in the small pelvis on both sides of the uterus. They contain about 400,000 ova (eggs), one of which ripens in each menstrual cycle. The female sexual hormones estrogen and progesterone are produced in the ovaries.
