Chemistry, pharmacology. Any of various organic compounds with basic chemical properties and containing at least one nitrogen atom in a heterocyclic ring, occurring in many plants. They are often poisonous and have pharmacological effects. Examples are atropine, caffeine, quinine, morphine, cocain, and nicotine.
