Pharmacology. A toxic alkaloid extracted from Atropa belladonna and other members of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). Atropine inhibits the action of the parasympathetic nervous system. It is pharmacologically used to dilate the pupil and to stop muscular spasms. It increases the heart rate, and reduces glandular secretions such as sweat.
