Biochemistry. A highly toxic alkaloid found in tobacco leaves. It is the agonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors where it stimulates neurons and ultimately blocks synaptic transmission. Nicotine in small dose causes an increase in adrenaline level which leads to an increase in heart rate, blood pressure and respiration.
