inulin

Biochemistry. A polysaccharide of fructose found in the roots and rhizomes of many composite plants (e.g., dahlia, artichoke). It is used in physiologic investigation for determination of the rate of glomerular function, as a marker of extracellular space, and in food for diabetics.
